The Roman Philology Chair “Petru Roşca” plenary provides the profound studying process of the Roman and Oriental languages (the Chinese and Korean language and culture), both at the Faculty of Letters, and the teaching of the French language, culture and civilization at the Faculty of Letters and other faculties within ULIM.

The pivot of the activities of the above mentioned Chair, is oriented towards the  formation of highly qualified teaching specialists in the area of the French language, culture and civilization at the License cycle (the Translation and interpretation specialty) and Master cycle (the program: Foreign languages applied in tourism and international trade and Specialized translation and intercultural communication: Germanic languages).

Firstly, the object of the Roman Philology in the context of multiple philology aims at historical, comparative, diachronic and synchronic study of the Roman languages and literatures (French, Spanish, and Romanian). Although, the language research is a part of linguistics but philology rather follows the analysis of (literary, scientific, publishing, etc.) texts, in the literal sense, no philological research is possible without solid linguistic bases: the boundaries between linguistics and philology have not been and are not yet very precise.

The motto of the Roman Philology Chair “Petru Roşca”: To promote with balanced academism the accomplishments of the great Romanists from Wilhelm Meyer-Lübke (1861-1936), Karl Vossler (1872-1949), Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913), Charles Bally (1865-1947), to Leo Spitzer (1887-1960), André Martinet (1908-1999), Albert Dauzat (1877-1955), Ferdinand Brunot (1860-1936), Eugeniu Coșeriu (1921-2001), Silviu Berejan  (1927-2007), Grigore Cincilei (1936 – 1999), Victor Banaru (1941 – 1997).

As an independent discipline, the Roman philology appeared just like the Germanic philology and the Comparative Linguistics, as a result of the scientific-cultural movement initiated by the Romanticism in Europe, at the end of the 18^th century.

The researches in the field of Roman philology have been and are always on the rise. The scientific publications of the Chair during the years 1993 (from the foundation of the chair within the Faculty of Letters until nowadays exceeded the number of 2000 (monographs, articles, studies, dictionaries, textbooks and university courses).

The faculty’s periodicals: Philological studies, Francopolyphonie (2006-2018), Intertext (2010 – until nowadays) are recognized and valued in philological researches not only by those who are interested from the Republic of Moldova and Romania. Our periodicals can be found in various library centers from Europe, America and Africa.

One of the most distinguished features of the Roman Philology Chair constitutes the teaching staff, which is a homogenous staff endowed with an impeccable scientific competence and training. It is the only chair where six Ph.D. professors work.

Another feature that is worth mentioning in this context is the love, and the responsibility of each professor towards the student who came to ULIM in order to study the Roman languages.
